GIRL BOSS - Impossible Show

GIRL BOSS is a rising promotion company based in Manchester. Last month, the boss of the company, Amy Pirie made the impossible into the possible. In the quaint, fancy local theatre, ‘Impossible’ - a night of glamour and exceptional music took place. The show was sponsored by London Copyright, Pop Boutique, Nasty Gal, Lauren Clarke Makeup and Michael John Training School. Amy made the venue her own; even adding a little “selfie spot”, with a lit up mirror where you could take pictures with your friends.

Avani James graced the stage, with her co-star of Sugar, Mathew Petit. Avani wearing a sheek, gothic outfit; an elegant black and red dress (which I definitely want to wear myself), while Mathew wore a skater black dress, with strong, grunge makeup. Avani welcomes the crowd, shouting; “Are you ready for some fashion?” With Avani on main vocals and Mathew on synth/guitar, the pair create a variety of tunes - thrilling, eccentric dance music and heartfelt, alternative pop. The music worked perfectly with the fashion show. The women stride out from the behind the curtains, displaying floaty and sparkly elegant dresses. Avani exclaims, “give a round of applause for all of these fierce women.”

She's a natural born showman. Avani doesn’t just sing with feeling, but moves with feeling. Dancing, posing and even walking on the catwalk herself. One minute you are dancing along with her, the next you are slowly swaying; entranced by the emotive performance. Passion, pain, love and hate. She's not ashamed of revealing her vulnerable side. Even though the majority of songs are serious, Avani speaks to the crowd positively and has a laugh. These two are creative influencers. It was a privilege to know that I am watching the start of something that is going to be BIG.

Flares. Leather. Out of control. The lovingly obnoxious Mint, embrace the well-known, rock ‘n’ roll persona. Their massive tunes, instantly make an impact. “Anyone like drugs? This song is about drugs?”. Songs such as ‘Superglue’ and ‘Nothing Seems To Get Me High’, were the sweaty, full throttle tunes that you didn’t know you needed. The women strutted confidently to the music; leather and velvet jackets and pants - which reflected the edginess and boldness of Mint. The frontman says to the audience, “You should be in the fashion show. You are all FIT.” Their boisterous bravado screams eccentricity, infusing the entire room with adrenaline. The industrial tones and dirty, raging vocals, corrupt your brain. They take over you. The band dominate the venue. Their music grabs you and thrashes you about, making you it’s puppet. The band know it. AND, they thrive off it. Their stadium filling spirit and controversial nature, is sure as hell what the industry needs.

The headliners for the night were The Bright Black. These are the boys next door type, that surprise you with their exuberant experimentation. They manage to create music which is catchy and easy-listening, but also something you haven’t truly heard before. The popping, funk bass lines, fearless vocal lines and shimmery riffs, create a surprisingly pleasant balance. The versatility of their music; makes you think of disco, indie, funk and soul. This gives everyone a taster of what they enjoy. Young or old, it doesn’t matter - everyone rushes to the stage. They conjure an energy that gets everyone on their feet, dancing and singing along to each track. The sauve, stylish frontman Travis Yates, dazzles the audience with his falsetto come hithers and natural charm. The models wore fluorescent, satin bomber jackets that mirrored the bands spirit. The band create a desirable vibe, that is incomparable to any other. Their tunes are an incredible crafted force of sonic textures, that are short and sweet while remaining distinctive.

Not only was the music excellent but it was amazing to see support from the audience and bands towards the models. Everybody would cheer every time a model walked on stage. It was liberating to see different body types on the catwalk. It was inspiring how confident the women are in their own bodies. You could tell that GIRL BOSS had made sure the bands and the women feel comfortable and happy. Combining the fashion show with a gig worked brilliantly - if you haven’t gone to any of GIRL BOSS’ event’s yet, then you need to.
